Thyroid carcinoma in multinodular goiter

چکیده
Background: It is suggested that hyperthyroidism protects against thyroid malignancy. It was suggested that the incidence of malignancy is lower in toxic multinodular goiters than in non-toxic multinodular goiters. Recent studies show controversies. Material and methods: The aim of this study is to determine the incidence and type of thyroid carcinoma in toxic and nontoxic multinodular goiter in our country (Albania), through histopathological examination of thyroidectomy specimens. Results: It is a retrospective, observational study in the Service Nr1 of General Surgery in Tirana, Albania. Histology reports of patients operated for toxic MG, non-toxic MG were reviewed to identify thyroid cancer incidence. The incidence of TC in TMG was found to be 9.1%, in NMG was found to be 9.4%. Conclusions: As we see the incidence of malignancy in TMG is not very low as thought and it resulted nearly the same as in NMG. Which reminds physicians to consider the possible association between hyperthyroidism and cancer. The risk of malignancy should not be underestimated and FNAC should be done for all prominent nodules to discover neoplasy.

CD117 Expression in Multinodular Goiter and Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma and Its Association with Prognostic Factors
Background and purpose: Multinodular goiter is a benign enlargement of thyroid gland and papillary thyroid carcinoma is the most common type of thyroid cancer. Today, immunohistochemical markers can be used in diagnosis and prognosis of tumors. The aim of this study was to compare the expression of CD117 in multinodular goiter and papillary thyroid carcinoma and its association with prognostic...
متن کاملA Rare Case of Metastasis of Renal Clear Cell Carcinoma to the Thyroid Gland, Presenting as a Goiter Nodule, Three Years After Nephrectomy
Thyroid gland metastatic tumors are rare in clinical practice. Clear cell RCC is one of common metastatic tumors to thyroid. We here reported a case of incidentally found clear cell renal carcinoma metastasis to the thyroid gland 3 years after nephrectomy, in the thyroidectomy procedure performed for the patient due to the thyroid enlargement caused by multinodular goiter. A 65-year-old Iranian...
متن کاملSolitary intrathyroidal metastasis of renal clear cell carcinoma in a toxic substernal multinodular goiter
INTRODUCTION Thyroid gland is a rare site of clinically detectable tumor metastasis. CASE REPORT A 71-year-old woman was referred to our department for an evaluation of toxic multinodular substernal goiter. She had a history of renal clear cell carcinoma of the left kidney, which had been resected 2 years previously. US confirmed the multinodular goiter. Total thyroidectomy with neuromonitori...
متن کاملMultinodular Goiter Hot Nodules with Amazing Shape of Thyroid
A 45-year-old female presented with symptoms of hyperthyroidism and hot nodules in the right lobe, which was diagnosed as nodular goiter by fine-needle aspiration. An anomalous thyroidectomy and difficult dissection with multiple rotations were performed around the trachea. As a remark, the pathology confirmed the presence of goiter with modular nodules (Figure 1). A macroscopic photograph show...

OBJECTIVE To assess the diagnostic value of dynamic contrast medium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) in detection of thyroid carcinoma compared with fine-needle aspiration biopsy and frozen section analysis in multinodular goiter. DESIGN Prospective clinical study. SETTING University hospital. PATIENTS Thirty consecutive patients with nodular goiter without any clinical risk ...
متن کاملThyroid cancer in patients with hyperthyroidism.
Thyroid cancer can be associated with thyrotoxicosis caused by Graves' disease, toxic multinodular goiter, or autonomously functioning thyroid adenoma. The objective of this study was to summarize current evidence regarding the association of thyroid cancer and hyperthyroidism, particularly with respect to the type of hyperthyroidism found in some patients, and whether this affects the outcome ...
